Traverse Middle Earth
The Lord of the Rings trilogy written by famed author J.R.R Tolkien was shot entirely by director Peter Jackson in New Zealand. With its ample green, lush and breath-taking mountainous locations, it is not difficult to see why the country was chosen as the movie site. One of these magnificent locations was the Waikato town of Matamata which provided the backdrop to Middle Earth in the movie. The village of Hobbiton was built and rebuilt for the other movies in the trilogy. The village still remains and attracts many tourists and movie fans every day. Other locations used in the movie include Nelson Tasman as well as Dimrill Dale which contains the splendid Mount Olympus and Mount Owen peaks.
Hitting all the right notes
Let us be honest, New Zealand was the real star in the Oscar-winning movie, The Piano which profiled the natural shores of the beautiful Karekare Beach where the movie was predominantly shot. The beautiful love story between a mute piano mother and a forester named Baines went on to win three Oscars for Best Actress, Best Screen Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Anna Paquin who is the second youngest Oscar winner in history. Paquin won the award when she was just 11 years old.
King Kong in New Zealand?
Peter Jackson who is from New Zealand knew what he was doing when he chose Wellington in New Zealand as the location to shoot the iconic King Kong movie in 2005. The shoot took place at Lyall Bay which was used as Skull Island.It really was a case of beauty killing the beast in the beautiful New Zealand setting where the movie was shot.
